resume within a half hour to an hour from now. we are told it's being pushed back, the detectives just arrived and they said they needed a little extra time to get some evidence and get the investigation underway. so the detectives and the coroner arrived about an hour ago. again, b.a.r.t. service is expected to resume within the hour. b.a.r.t. police say the shooting happened in the bus loading area. a black man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. a woman was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. police do not know if the two victims were traveling together and are investigating a motive. one male suspect has been detained. police are reviewing video to see if there are other suspects. bart police say despite the shooting, they believe the system is safe and hope this does not deter people from riding b.a.r.t.. >> we don't have a number of

shootings, whether it's in the daylight or evening so this is atypical. b.a.r.t. is a secure system. >> were two b.a.r.t. police officers at this station who responded right away. b.a.r.t. police teamed up with the sheriffs department to search the area no other suspects were found. b.a.r.t. passengers are being transferred to other stations via bus. kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. an investigation continues into an alleged sexual assault involving star 49ers receiver michael crabtree. the 25-year-old is in atlanta now preparing for tomorrow's big game against the falcons. let's bring in henry wofford with a look at what crabtree's lawyer is saying today. i hear there is no available for him in atlanta, so we're hearing from his attorney instead. >> the 49ers are a victory away from advancing to the super

bowl, but their star receiver has much more than football on his mind. michael crabtree is under investigation for sexual assault. yesterday crabtree voluntarily met with san francisco police before he boarded a mid afternoon flight to atlanta. police say the sexual allegation involves crabtree inside a san francisco hotel early sunday morning. the day after the 49ers beat the packers. crabtree was not detained or arrested. he's willing to meet with police if they have additional questions for him. this is what his lawyer released in a statement from earlier today. on friday, january 18, 2013, michael voluntarily met with the san francisco police department and provided a statement. michael fully cooperated with the inspectors and will continue to do so throughout the investigation. out of respect and integrity for the process, we have no further comment at this time. as you mentioned, chris, once again michael crabtree has not

spoken to reporters. at this point the 49ers have not made him available to talk to reporters. if that was the case, most likely he would be expected to talk football. later in sports, we'll preview the nfc championship game. we'll have a live report from atlanta. >> hard not to get distracted. the hostage crisis at a bp plant in the algerian desert came to a bloody end today. the algerian government reports 32 islamic militants and 23 hostages are dead following an army raid today, the fourth day of that crisis. defense secretary leon panetta called the loss of life appalling and vowed to bring the terrorists to justice. >> nobody is going to attack the united states of america and get away with it. for that reason we have made a commitment that we'll go after al qaeda wherever they are. and wherever they try to hide. >> at this point the u.s. will

only confirm the death of one american engineer from texas and one british worker. it is not clear how many hostages were taken in the first place. on thursday, the algerian army began its counterattack to liberate the plant that is deep in the desert 800 miles from the capital. officials say the rebels were about to drive the hostages to another country. a man walked on stage and pointed a gas pistol a at politician delivering a speech in bulgaria's capital today. the turkish leader struck the man before he could pull the trigger. a group of people kicked, punched and stomped on the gunman before he was arrested and taken to the hospital. gas pistols are non-lethal weapons used for self-defense, but they can cause life threatening injuries when fired at close range. monday's presidential inauguration and the martin luther king holiday coincide

this year. and it is no coincidence that president obama today is invoking dr. king's legacy calling on americans to do something for each other on a national day of service. brian moar reports from washington. >> reporter: on a day of national service, president obama led by example. he and the first lady volunteered at a local elementary school. he was honoring the life and legacy of dr. martin luther drink, just like he did before his first inauguration. >> it's a symbol of how our democracy works and how we peacefully transfer power, but it should also be an affirmation that we're in this together. >> not far away the vice president and a bunch of bidens helped to pack supply kits for the u.s. military. an estimated 250,000 people today did something to help somebody else. in rochester, there was a clothing drive in manhattan, volunteers added a little life to the walls of a senior center.

in orlando the groassroots services were literal. former first daughter chelsea clinton encouraged people to do more than just celebrate on this inauguration weekend. some chose to create cards to cheer up kids in hospitals. >> everyone that helps the unfortunate families, so we made several card force them. >> reporter: others wrote letters to military veterans, some helped animals. this woman brought her sister, and had a message for the rest of us. >> they need to get up, get off their backside and get out and do something for someone else. >> a message these volunteers hope will echo long beyond this national day of service. brian moar, nbc news, washington. we'll have extension coverage of the inauguration on air and online. go to nbcbayarea.com for live streaming video and photo

galleries. there will be live reports from washington, d.c. starting tomorrow morning. the presidential inauguration will happen thousands of people thousands of miles away, but hundreds in the bay area are also participating in it through the national day of service. volunteers gave their time today to take part in a habitat for humanity event in daley city. the group was assigned jobs at a condo construction site where there will be homes for 36 families. they will house families from marin, san francisco and san mateo. >> the volunteers are building the yard where the families will play. they are painting the doors to the home that's families will live in. they are working on the roofs, putting shingles on. it's a real experience unlike any other in the bay area. >> construction continues for the next few months. the families will move in in the last few weeks of april. next at 5:00, a different side to lance armstrong.

why the disgraced cyclist became emotional in part two of his interview with oprah winfrey. and we will show you what notre dame linebacker manti teo is saying. >> there are some dangerous continues today for the beach and a preview of the maverick surf contest. good evening, we talked about the high surf all week. today the surf got up to about ten feet. expect it to crest by 20, 30 feet by tomorrow and warm conditions. we will talk more about how warm it will be for your sunday coming up.

on the eve of the maverick surf contest, dangerous surf and strong riptides are forcing surfers out of the water. a number of surfers were caught in the riptides this afternoon and the coast guard responded to the scene. monte francis is at ocean beach with an update. hopefully they're okay, monte. >> that is the good news. they are all okay. we have a car horn going off here, we apologize for that.

total of six surfers, they got into some kind of distress here today. the good news, they're all okay. one of them suffered a minor injury. the conditions were rough earlier today. as you can see behind me, it's calmed down considerly. the coast guard came through on a life boat earlier and told the surfers to paddle in all of this on the eve of the maverick surf contest. professional surfers have come to the bay area from all over the world to compete. the surf can be treacherous for even the pros, and there are warnings for spectators not to get too close to the water. organizers set up a big tv screen a safe distance from shore so people can see the action. we talked to the head judge for mavericks who described the conditions the surfers will be up against tomorrow. >> we were waiting so long, didn't have an event last year. everybody is anxious for this thing to happen. we have a really long period

swell, offshore winds, sunny skies. tides are pretty good. so it's just going to be really interesting. >> reporter: now here at ocean beach in san francisco, people came out to look at the big waves. as for those surfers in distress, the coast guard tells me they were able to paddle in on their own. a coast guard helicopter was about to hoist one out of the water near seal rock but he, too, was able to make it to shore independently. a nature photographer shared his photos with us. again, no one was seriously hurt. the coast guard said one surfer suffered a shoulder injury. mavericks is tomorrow. and an advisory is until tomorrow morning. the horn, we thought it was over. but it just started again. monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> we heard you all right. thank you very much. we'll see you at 6:00.

even nonsports fans are watching to see what the truth is in one of the most bizarre stories in sports. today manti te'o denied he was involved in a hoax involving a

fake online girlfriend. teo made his first comments last night with espn. he said he did not know for a sure that his girlfriend never existed until wednesday, when he said a man called and admitted to creating the online hoax, then apologized. te'o admitted to tailoring the story so it seemed like he met the woman before her supposed death. >> anthony is here with the forecast. >> temperatures got into the 70s. the san mateo cam showing those colors. the hazy conditions, the fine particulates in the atmosphere, unhealthy air all-iquality, but gorgeous.

half moon bay started off at 46 degrees, by noon, spiked up to 71 degrees. look at the other locations that saw 70s. scotts valley for the third day in a row, 73. santa cruz, 73 as well. probably sent lots of folks flocking out to the beach, even san jose, 66. it has cooled now, as our sun is going down. 59 in san jose. 62 in santa cruz. lots of 50s into the peninsula and the north and east bay. we are expecting another dry day for tomorrow. high pressure will remain in control, not for tomorrow but for the next few days. we're talking about a prolonged period of sunshine that will mean a few more unhealthy air quality days. the best thing is we're talking about 60s and 70s, finally time to thaw out after this cold week across the bay area. temperatures wl start off cold tomorrow. 27 in santa rosa. 30 in napa. 29 in concord and livermore. san jose, 36 degrees. tomorrow again we are expecting

another warm day. not as warm as today. a lot of that heating has spread across the area. temperatures tomorrow more uniform across the board. 64 in santa rosa. 64 in livermore. 63 in san francisco. not as wa the mavericks in town for tomorrow. that's when we expect some of the highest surf across the area. the first round begins at 8:00. you can catch this on nbcbayarea.com. we will be streaming it all day long. the temperatures comfortable, but not as warm as it was today. 67 for the high temperature tomorrow at half moon bay. as far as your seven-day forecast, the warm weather will stick around for the next couple of days. you'll notice by tuesday, a few clouds drift in. that's going to cool us a bit. the system scoots to our north on wednesday. that will offer a few showers if you live in the north bay, otherwise not a big storm system in the next seven days. there will be a cut-off low that drifts across the pacific over

welcome back. right now the san francisco 49ers are feeling good. but their goal is to feel super. the red and gold are a victory away from earning the right to battle in super bowl xlvii, but in order to get to the big game, they have to get by the dirty birds of the south. mindy joins us from atlanta with a preview of the nfc championship game between the 49ers and falcons. what's the latest, mindy? >> reporter: hi, henry. the crews are putting on the final paint on the field here of the georgia dome. the 49ers are done with their practices and their meetings. all that is left to do is play
